Responds to the Chris Brown / Rihanna alleged Domestic Violence Incident

Many of us have watched in dismay as the alleged incident between singer’s Chris Brown and Rihanna have played out in the media.
While I am not an advocate of convicting citizens in the media spotlight; I am advocate for awareness in the area of violence against
women. There is never an acceptable reason for men to abuse women; thus if R&B Singer,Chris Brown is found to be guilty of abusing
R&B Singer, Rihanna he should definitely be held accountable.

Violence Against Women is an epidemic that must be addressed.  News around the country is exploding with headlines that reflect more
and more incidents of violence against women that often lead to Homicides. Domestic Violence is the leading cause of injury to women.
One out of three women is affected by Domestic Violence. Domestic abuse incidents occur every 15 seconds in our country. According to
the American Bar Association Domestic Violence Homicide is the number one cause of death for African American females between the
ages of 15 and 34.

The statistics are even more alarming for abusers who have been previously exposed to domestic violence. Chris Brown allegedly was a
victim of domestic abuse and thus according to statistics he is four times more likely to commit abuse in a dating relationship. With that
being said, we need to seriously take a look at the state of Domestic Violence within our country and how we are addressing the needs of
the victims and even the abusers. The issue of Domestic Violence appears in the forefront now because of the celebrity status of Chris
Brown and Rihanna but what about all of the victims that are suffering behind closed doors who are not celebrities but who are simply
crying out for help and hoping that someone will bring attention to the need for an immediate initiative from our Federal, State and Local
leaders that will say: “Enough is enough, domestic violence stops here!”

Witney’s Lights seeks to take the lead in the area of prevention through education and advocacy programs. Our organization knows
firsthand the devastating effects of domestic violence and how unfortunately if we do not give this abuse the attention it deserves ultimately
it may result in death. We need to take the Brown/Rihanna issue seriously and take a look at ourselves as we ask “ What am I doing so
that my son or daughter does not make the same mistake?”.  Take a moment to advise those in your household that there is a zero
tolerance for violence, become aware of characteristics such as control and stalking that are often pre-cursers  to violence, have
discussions with those that you know to make sure they know the signs of domestic violence and lastly, support organizations such as
Witney’s Lights (www.witneyslights.com)and Domestic Violence Coalitions around the country as we work tirelessly to bring domestic
violence from darkness into the light!
